We are in the mood to have some fun with the "Rocker" Theme. School is coming to an end and I so enjoy using the "pet rock" theme. The students enjoy listening to the story: Everybody Needs a Rock. We venture outdoors to find our "perfect" rock. Then we decorate our precious rock and develop a unique character.
First we paint our rock with a "base coat".
Next we add some rough details that resemble a face, (later we will add 'googley eyes').
Finally the rocks will recieve a coat of varnish and hair.
We'll use our creation to write a story after we listen to, and learn about Joe Rock.
The series is so much fun and has a read along DVD for the Smartboard. Words and songs highlight for the students to follow along.
Joe has many adventures, but the first episode is the most loveable.
Joe is a rock that came from a giant mountain and lives in a peaceful garden. Kate transports Joe from his gareden home, into her pocket, and to her bedroom where he becomes an outlet for her imagination.
Kate dresses Joe with a hat, colored hair, an ear, and a tattoo. Joe is not impressed until...
Kate introduces him to a guitar and Joe finds his inner rock star!
We so enjoyed the stories and working with the comprehension and decoding strategies; while building on our ideas of what adventures a rock may experience.
When it come to writing stories, I decided to provide a template that would provide a guide as well as some sentence building practice.
I shared this story with the students and asked them to notice that the story was about friends helping each other. In the beginning, we find out who the friends are. Next we tell how they can help each other. Finally we add an ending.
This is a huge undertaking when it comes to:
A) Generating an idea about two friends
B) Telling what happens to help the friend
C) Support and encouragement help the students keep going
so all attempts in writing are rewarded with praise.
